The Story
ic! berlin was born from a moment of pure frustration. In 1996, founder Ralph Anderl broke his glasses and, unable to find a repair that satisfied him, decided to engineer an entirely new hinge system. The result was the now-iconic screwless sheet-metal hinge — a design so elegant it can be assembled and disassembled by hand, without any tools.
That breakthrough wasn't just clever engineering — it was a philosophy. ic! berlin frames are designed to be taken apart, adjusted, and reassembled by the wearer. Lose a temple? Replace it yourself. Want a different color combination? Swap the parts. This modular approach was revolutionary in the mid-90s and remains unique in the industry today.
Every ic! berlin frame is manufactured in their Berlin factory using surgical-grade stainless steel that's cut, bent, and finished by hand. The material is so thin and flexible that frames can be bent flat without breaking — a party trick that also happens to make them nearly indestructible in daily use.
The brand's aesthetic walks a fine line between industrial minimalism and fashion-forward design. Their collaborations and limited editions push boundaries, while their core collection offers clean, architectural frames that have earned a cult following among designers, architects, and anyone who appreciates German engineering at its finest.

Why We Carry ic! berlin
"ic! berlin is the brand that makes engineers and designers equally excited. Their screwless hinge is one of those innovations that, once you understand it, makes everything else feel outdated. We love showing customers how the frame comes apart and goes back together — it's a moment of genuine delight that never gets old."
— Stacey Plank, Licensed Optician Since 1998
